About Swami Vishnudevananda

The first Hatha yoga professor appointed at the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy in Rishikesh, India, Swami Vishnudevananda trained Indian and Western students of yoga for nearly five decades. After living for 12 years with his Master, Swami Sivananda, serving as his personal secretary and many other roles at the ashram, he was sent by his Master to spread yoga in the West. He arrived to the West in 1957 and for 36 years he worked tirelessly to teach yoga, spread peace and help humanity in any possible way. He promoted world peace, love of humanity, and unity in diversity, while also working toward mastering Hatha yoga, Raja Yoga and all other paths of yoga. Regarded as an expert in Hatha yoga and Raja Yoga, Swami Vishnudevananda wrote Meditation and Mantras, along with the now classics Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga.

Swami Vishnu-Devananda first began practicing yoga in 1947 when he entered the Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh at the age of 20. He took his monastic vow (sannyasa) within a year of beginning his training and subsequently felt a great need to be on his own. After obtaining permission from his Master, he walked to Uttarkashi and found a small house in which he practiced different yoga and meditation techniques four times a day for three months. Following this period, he returned to the ashram and fully dedicated himself to spreading his teachings.

Over the years, Swami Vishnu-Devananda was instrumental in the growth of yoga in the West. As the first disciple of Swami Sivananda to come to the West, his influence led to the founding of more than 70 Sivananda centers around the world, along with the rapid growth of yoga classes in many hotels, gyms, and fitness centers.
